Will you help a child have an education?

With the world economy failing to show any real signs of a recovery and in many countries actually going backwards there is an even greater need by charities to raise funds to help those people who are even less fortunate.

It is often the case that it is the children who suffer most and  their future prospects in life are often determined during their formative years, where a lack of education can be a hurdle they have to overcome if they wish to enter gainful employment. This is why at PSKSP we try our hardest never to turn away child who wishes to enter the school system.

In Thailand although schooling is free pupils have to supply all of the books, pens, school and Scout uniforms as well as the money for snacks at school. In many many cases these costs are simply beyond the resources of the family and when it comes to the question as to whether to spend money on food to feed the family or to send a child to school naturally feeding the family comes first.

The cost of supplying a child with everything that he or she needs to be able to attend school starts as low as 3500Baht a year, that is just £70 or USD111,  so for less than half the cost of a can of fizzy drink a day you could ensure that a child has an education. 100% of all of the money that PSKSP receives is used for the benefit of the children, no deductions are made for administrative costs as these are met by the trustees of the charity.

At the moment we have twenty-four children who are shown on our website looking for sponsors who are willing to  give them the gift of a lifetime, the chance of an education. This is more children than we have ever had seeking sponsors at one time; with the school year having started just one week ago it is important that if the kids are to enter the school system then we try to find sponsors for them now.

Please take a look at our website and consider if you are able to help in any way.

A girl needing a sponsor

Shutipha (In pink dress) . DOB. 08/03/1998  # 154
This delightful child is one of twins born with a congenital deformity.  Both she and her sister have two knee caps on one knee and were born with only 4 toes on one foot; she on the left foot and her sister on the right.
She is the 'younger' and less robust of the twins, and although her school has made accommodation for her so that all her classes may be taken on the ground floor, the physical effort it takes for her to get from one class to another is exhausting and she is often absent from school.
Her parents died several years ago but she has lived with her grandparents since she was born. Grandma makes a meagre living selling Thai sweets and any vegetables (donated by someone who has an allotment, and for whom she helps harvest the crops) excess to personal requirements.

Three children needing help for school.

Napat   (M)           DOB 19/01/2004

Jinatha (M)            DOB 02/06/2006
Anun    (M)            DOB 25/10/2004

Father is in jail on drugs charges and mother abandoned the children. They now live with their grandma and great grandma, who cook and sell cheap Thai meals.  From this they make about 9,600 B per month.  Utilities are 2,000 B and loan repayments total 7,700 B per month.

The children need scholarships and an allowance to buy snacks at school.

A child needing a sponsor

Kanyaporn         DOB 25/02/2007

This little girl is the youngest of 6 children (one of whom has thalassaemia) whose mother died very recently.  Father works in construction when work is available, earning 5,400 B per month. They live rent free in grandma's house, but utilities, food and hospital transport costs are in excess of this figure.  She needs help to cover school fees and snacks during the day.

Another child needing help.

Pornchai

This delightful child is the eldest of three boys, all living at home with their parents.  Father is a construction worker earning 8,000 B per month.  Mother takes care of the two younger boys (aged 2 yrs and 7 months) herself, as the youngest child was born with a cleft palate and has to be fed through a tube.

It is a pitiful case, as although the treatment necessary for him will be given free when he is strong enough, he is grossly underweight.  With the expenses for the month totalling 7,310 B (before food costs), the family is in a desperate situation.  This little one needs help with school fees and money for snacks during the day.

Completion of sidecar for disabled child.

Yesterday we posted that we hoped a motorbike sidecar was nearing completion and we hoped to hand it to the family in a few days.
The building of the sidecar is now finished and as you can see from the photos gives plenty of room for the family.

A child needing help

This young boy lives with his mother in a nice house bought from the proceeds of a land sale.  Originally a fortune teller, Mum became mentally ill and is now unable to work.  She sold everything there was to sell to provide food and pay the bills, but there is now nothing left. There is no electricity or water; often they have nothing to eat.

Sometimes her brother gives them money for food, and her elder son gives her 300 B a month.  There is no money for education or snacks.

Children in desperate need of help.

Vanvisa  (F) DOB 31/03/1998 File # 222 )
Wanya   (F) DOB 11/01/2003 File # 221 )
The parents of these children are separated, so they live with their grandparents.  Grandfather is handicapped and cannot work and grandmother has rheumatoid arthritis and is unable to walk.

They live in abject poverty in a small, airless concrete room with corrugated metal roofing and door.  They sleep on a raised wooden platform covered with linoleum, with mosquito nets.  Father sends 2,000B – 3,000 B (£40-60) per month, as he is able.  The girls are sometimes given leftover food from school – if there is any. They need urgent help with education and food.

Evacuation at the Hauy Phong Children's Home

Hauy Phong children's home

As we support the work of the Hauy Phong Children's Home where there are more than 300 children being cared for we keep in regular contact with the staff at the home.
Last week chemical explosions at an industrial plant a few miles from the home meant evacuating all of the children and staff some 40 miles away to Banglamung. This brief email from the head social worker at the home advises that they are all safe and well.

"How are You? I hope you are very well .last week had an accident at Chemical industrial mabtaput near our home. IT 's explosion. We immigrate to banglamung chonburi. but now everything is clear and return.
I am very glad too. Now everyone are safe. But those day some children/staff are fainted.
thank you very much from our heart
see you ka"

Sponsors' gift for two sisters

A few days ago  sponsors who were unable to be in Pattaya at this time gave two little girls and their grandparents a super treat by sending some money for a birthday shopping treat.

Unfortunately, although it had been arranged ahead of time, when Suky went to pick them up, another family member had already taken Thipwan out somewhere and they weren't back. However, since they are virtually the same size, Wanvisa decided that she would be responsible for choosing Thipwan's things - and a very good job of it she made, too.

It seems that she likes everything yellow, and her sister's favourite colour is pink, so Suky and she did try to stick to this, although it wasn't always possible because of the size. That said, after choosing new outfits, they bought a soft toy and a big bucket of KFC and a birthday cake to take home to share with family and friends - the very first time they'd ever been given such a treat. Everyone was so happy.

It seems that their aunt is married to a farang, and so her children have lots of lovely things and the girls are used to getting their cast-offs, for which they're grateful, but it's not the same as being able to have something beautiful AND new AND all their own, you know?

We were thrilled to learn that Wanvisa is first in her class of 40 students. Isn't that great? Thipwan is not doing quite so well, she is 14th in her class, but when we think of such big numbers of students we reckon that's pretty good, too.

Shopping gift for Scholarship student

An unexpected gift from his sponsor provided an opportunity for a shopping trip for 12 year old Nawin one of our Scholarship students.

At Tesco / Lotus Nawin chose a radio controlled car for himself and then used the remainder of the money to buy food for his family. After the shopping trip it was back to his home with the rewards of his shopping trip.
