A second day with his students in Pattaya for an Australian sponsor

As you would be able to surmise from the photographs,  the boys, Jeff and your 'terrible trio' had a very enjoyable outing yesterday - although the T.Ts were all suffering withdrawal symptoms since there was no KFC again!  What is the world coming to?

The boys were happy to be out together, but we had separate trolleys for them - so that nothing got mixed up and there were no disappointed faces at home later.  In actual fact Pitchit and his cousin Watchakorn are like twins, they're so close.  They do everything together and choose the same outfits - talk about peas in a pod...  They're always so outgoing, always smiling - and very respectful.  Kritsada too, although a little more reticent initially, soon relaxed and was flashing big beaming smiles at everyone throughout the day.  There are all really great kids to take out - so well behaved, but fun - and for them to be given free rein to choose what they wanted was such a treat for them.  I thought the 'twins' would make great supporters for Norwich City - what do you think?

Jeff was such a gem, and always concerned not to make them feel they were 'on display' when he was taking the occasional photographs.  He asked that if we had shots over and above those he'd taken.

Since it will be Pitchit's birthday soon, Jeff asked if he would like to choose something extra for himself.  However, since he wasn't sure what he wanted, 1,000 B was left with me and he is thinking about it between now and then.  We'll give him a call later and ask him again, and then arrange the purchase.  Jeff even said that if it's something he's set his heart on and it doesn't fall into the budget, then he'll send the extra by Paypal.  Such a generous man.

So there we are - another super time out for us all and Jeff was so happy he's hoping to persuade friends at home that this is something they, too, would get great satisfaction from doing, so here's hoping, eh?

2013 New Year Parties Appeal

It's that time of the year again when we ask if you will think about helping the kids have a special day over the Christmas / New Year holidays.
Today we are launching our annual appeal to sponsor a child at one of the three parties we will be holding in Pattaya over the Christmas / New Year period and again this year we have kept the sponsorship at £2.50 a child.  We estimate that about 650 children will attend the three parties.

You can read the appeal  in your web browser  on our website:  http://www.slumkids.org/2013_parties_appeal.html

You can also view a YouTube Christmas / New Year greetings video greeting made by the kids of the Hauy Phong Children's Home here
We hope that you are able to see you way clear to sponsoring a child for a place at one of the parties and in doing so help these kids have a memorable day.

Australian sponsor's visit to Pattaya

We had a wonderful visit with our newest sponsor today - a lovely man.  I think he was really happy to meet Tanakit, and since we had both Suky and Tom today, the trip was good for all. He is a very gentle man and chatted easily with us all, taking photo's for his personal album as we progressed.

Lunch was taken at Pizza Co, where (since Suky and Tom could read the message on the front of the waitresses pinafore) we managed to get a card giving us 10% on food both in the restaurant and for home delivery and (I understand) a buy one get one free concession.  I was happy to buy the card (200B), but jeff insisted on doing so - which I thought was very generous, especially as he was not going to be able to use it much (maybe tomorrow, depending on his other little charges). He even brought a gift for Suky and I, which was just so kind.

Tanakit was very quiet, but responded very well to Big Brother Tom and by the end of the shopping trip was beginning to make his voice heard.  Jeff was delighted to learn that he was 3rd in a class of 39, and that he's studying computer - although the decision as to which specific area won't be made until the end of the year.

He is extremely slim for his age, and so finding the right sizes for him was quite difficult, but Jeff was infinitely patient, and we bought what could be found in Tesco (basket ball, two t-shirts, a basketball vest, jeans, underwear and some groceries etc for his Mum) and then we went over to the Outlet Mall to find sports shoes and basketball shorts.  We ended up having to buy girl's shoes as his feet were so tiny  (it seems that this is a common move here) and then if we hadn't insisted that he try both shoes on, he would have opened the box at home and found two right shoes!  Still, it made us all laugh and Tanakit as much as any of us.
Taking Tanakit home afterwards allowed Jeff to see where he lived, so I think that was good, too.

UK sponsor's first meeting with his student.

Tom and I  had the pleasure of meeting Tim  for the first time, and it was good to see
how happy Golf was to meet his sponsor – shy, but happy.

At first Golf only spoke in Thai to Tom, and Tom translated when it was relevant, but as our afternoon progressed and he got excited, Golf did chat a little bit to Tim.

We met in front of Royal Garden Plaza and since it was lunch time, the all important question was asked – and guess what?  We ate at McDonalds.  Well, Boonying excused himself (and who could blame him) and I tried to sway him to Burger King (it being next door), but to no avail – Cheeseburger Sets  No. 7 x 4 was the order of the day, and Golf was very pleased.

After lunch it was off to the Go Kart track, where Tom took photo’s and I was chief cheer leader as I kept an eye on the two budding Formula 1 drivers, watching the competition that was going on between them and waving like a lunatic every time they came into view.  Ten minutes goes very quickly, but they both seemed to get a kick out of it.

Since Golf also likes Crazy Golf, we then set off to Thappraya Road to see if the one there was still functioning (since only I knew what I was talking about, I thought perhaps it has closed down).  It was looking a bit “Southend in the winter”, but was open, so Tom, Tim and Golf prepared for battle and I sat with my crossword and a pineapple shake.  That proved a real hit and Golf got very excited (and sneaky -as he distracted Tim and popped his ball in the hole ) and chatted and laughed as they progressed.

The place is attached to a bar/restaurant and they also have pool tables, so before we left Tim asked Golf if he would like to play and   he immediately took up the challenge, so there was more fun and laughter.  I think Tim enjoyed himself as much as Golf did.

Since it was Golf’s birthday and Tim wanted to buy him a present, it was back up to our favourite store, where after some deliberation Golf decided he’d like a Ben Ten Walkie Talkie to take back to school with him.  Poor kid had to go back last night because he had an exam today, so Tom took him back to BKP bearing two boxes of munchkins to share with the kids.

Repairs to the home of a student.

The roof of the home where one of out students lives needed substantial repairs to the roof before the rainy season and we were asked if we could help.

We were able to get a couple of volunteers to carry out the work and we paid for the materials which cost £320. As you can see from the before and after photos the roof is now watertight and we were also able to insert an acrylic panel in the roof to let in some light.

Monthly food supplies for the kids.

We have many students who come from families living way below the poverty line and who need extra support for their food supplies.

Each month we deliver a food pack as (pictured) to those students on our food program, the monthly supply costs about 1200 Baht (£25) as helps to ensure that the students have enough food to keep them nourished

More Support from the Lady Boys of Bangkok shows' audiences

Yet again the audiences of the Lady Boys of Bangkok shows have shown their generosity by donating a further £1337 to the retiring collections.
This money will enable us to meet the increasing requests for help with food for the kids. With the heavy rains in Pattaya during September many of the parents working as casual labourers in the building trade have been laid-off and this has meant that money for food has been scarce and many parents are struggling to feed their kids.
Our thanks go to everyone who has donated to help make the lives of these kids a little better.
